85% of all Basque Autonomous Community municipalities (212 of 250) already have at least one KZgunea centre. The programme launching these centres offering free Internet training and access (Basque Government and EUDEL) will continue throughout 2004 until complete introduction has been achieved.

Regarding bigger municipalities, a total of 60 towns with over 5,000 inhabitants already have their own KZgunea centres, as will shortly be the case at the remaining five with a similar number of inhabitants: Amorebieta-Etxano, the Trápaga-Trapagaran Valley and Ortuella in Bizkaia; and Pasaia and Urnieta in Gipuzkoa.

These larger municipalities often have more than one centre to meet the demand of citizens who wish to learn about the Internet and use it. This is the case of eight town councils in the three Basque provinces: Vitoria-Gasteiz (5 KZgunea centres) in Alava; Barakaldo (2), Basauri (2), Bilbao (7), Galdakao (2) and Getxo (2) in Bizkaia; and Donostia-San Sebastian (6) and Tolosa (2) in Gipuzkoa.

KZguneetan Interneteko oinarrizko ikastaroa oraingoz 60.000 lagunek egin dute; beraz, prestatutako herritarrei dagokienean programaren helburuaren ia %80 lortu da: 15 urtetik gorako Euskadiko biztanleen %4 (74.000) prestatzea.

The number of people to have taken the basic Internet course at the KZgunea centres comes for the moment to over 60,000, representing almost 80% of the objective set by the programme with respect to trained citizens: 4% of the over-15 Basque population (74,000).

The number of people trained and percentage of the final objective achieved per province are as follows: Gipuzkoa: 22,000 (91%); Bizkaia: 30,000 (74%); and Alava: 8,000 (72%).

Women still show the highest numbers (63.17%), as do the over-35s (74.6%); while over half of those taking the course (51.05%) state that they are housewives, unemployed or retired.

The first button is a perfect example: in Ubide, Bizkaia, with its 168 inhabitants, the initial trained user goal has quadrupled. This village heads the list of three municipalities to have tripled their initial training objective: Berantevilla and Campezo/Kanpezu in Alava; and Mutiloa in Gipuzkoa.

Informatikako birusetatik babestea, segurtasun-kopiak egitea edo dokumentuak digitalizatzea dira, teknologia berrietara egokitzeko ahalegina egin beharra ikusten duten profesional autonomoen edo mikroenpresen gaurkotasuna osatu behar duten eguneroko zereginak. Protecting yourself against computer viruses, making back-up copies or digitalizing documents are everyday tasks required of self-employed professionals or micro-businesses who feel that they have to make an effort to adapt to the new technologies. And that's just what they've done: around 2,000 people have already followed some kind of training in Internet applications at the KZgunea centres organized for this purpose.

The Basque public companies SPRI and EJIE are collaborating in this KZprestakuntza program, the target of which is to increase the number of micro-businesses and self-employed workers familiar with the Internet.

A total of 47 KZgunea centres (shortly to increase to 60) in Alava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa offer these courses (2-hours in length, except for the basic Internet course which lasts for up to 10 hours) free of charge. The course catalogue contains 25 options adapted to the needs of micro-businesses, the self-employed and shop-owners. As part of the programme's continuous improvement process, each of the web pages corresponding to the 234 centres opened to date in 212 Basque municipalities gives details, after downloading, of the number of courses given (basic, advanced and sectoral training) and the evolution of their users, including those who have enrolled to surf the Internet and for the different levels of class, along with a certain amount of information (sex, age, job, etc.).

Moreover, in addition to improving the graphic format of this statistical data, we have added to each file the official coat-of-arms of the corresponding municipality in addition to a series of links to local places of interest, starting with the hyperlink to the portal of the corresponding town council.

These people's experience with the Internet depended on what they already knew about using a computer, despite the fact that none of them had one at home. Although most of them stated that they had used the technology on previous occasions, including the Internet, others had difficulty using the mouse and windows.
